Betsey is a Certified Meeks Method Exercise Specialist and is Level 3 trained. She is currently an Instructor-in- Training for The Meeks Method Level 1 workshops with The Meeks Institute.

Expertise, ingenuity and experience in the management of osteoporosis patients has led to her numerous national and local speaking engagements.

Initially her focus was to inform and educate the public about safe and effective management of Osteoporosis. She developed and teaches a 7 week program called "Walk TALL", which includes education and progressive exercises, based on The Meeks Method 12 point program. This program is reimbursable by insurance and always has a waiting list!  The program  includes important precautions, risk factors, and treatment options for this condition.  This treatment program is safe for all levels of the condition of osteoporosis and osteopenia and will help prevent fractures by improving your awareness, strength, balance, postural alignment, and will empower you to make informed decisions regarding your care.

Betsey has given many Community/Women's Health educational programs on Osteoporosis and safe movement programs.   Her experience with inpatient and SNF unit patients inspired and lead her to pioneer the development of the "Management of Acute Compression Fractures" protocol which she implemented in an acute care/SNF hospital and included the education of PT/OT staff as well as a nursing education program module for their role in the care of these patients, as well as educated the physicians so that the entire team worked together!

Her focus has expanded to instructing OT's, PT's and other healthcare/exercise professionals in S.A.F.E. exercise for all patients to improve posture and to prevent the first or the next fracture from occurring!

Why Should Therapists be Concerned?

Most fractures occur while people are performing their routine daily activities. Occupational  and Physical Therapists are positioned well with their background in functional activity and task analysis to integrate S.A.F.E.* movement patterns and the application of proper body mechanics and precautions to their instruction in exercise and during performance of BADL's/IADL's.

52% of females and 25% of all men will have an Osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime. The methods learned will equally apply to the therapists personal movement patterns while working with their patients! PT's and OT's work together with people with low bone mass and skeletal fragility. It is my sincere hope that all health care personnel who are involved in the care of these patients will collaborate to provide a consistent continuum of care to progress these patients appropriately and safely.
*S.A.F.E. = Skeletally Appropriate For Everyone
